Autism & Sleep

Many parents with children on the spectrum suffer from sleep issues but there IS good news!

GOOD sleep IS POSSIBLE!!

While it's individualized, there are a few things that are the same across the board and ways to get the ball rolling on that good sleep everyone needs.

First, let's talk about melatonin. It's often given to help aid sleep and while it's a great way to get a child to be sleepy, it doesn't make them stay asleep. Good sleep is possible without melatonin with routine and method (based on your child), HOWEVER....some children are deficient in melatonin, in which case you'll want to make that a part of your care.

Now....let's get to why you're reading this.

Let's start with what happens before bedtime.

It's important to find something relaxing for your child since overstimlation can hinder sleep. Keep in mind, it's based on your child but a routine can look like this:

  1. Brush teeth

  2. Change into pajamas

  3. Breathing exercises (they might need a few minutes to get their wiggles out. If so, add breathing after).

  4. Stretching

  5. Short book (you can even make one showing how the boy/girl does the same routine)

Once in bed, you can add a red nightlight and if sound doesn't stimulate them too much, some white noise.

*It's important to note that visual aids can go a very long way. You can purchase aids online (like Amazon or Etsy), or you can create you own and let your child take part in it.*

Once they are settled enough for bed, you'll want to find a sleep training method that works for them. If they need you in the room until they fall asleep, you can do something like the chair method. If they require you to sleep with them, something like camping out might be another option.

There's many options out there you can try. But if you want something curated for you child, I invite you to schedule a call with me on I Help Moms where I work with Autistic children to keep it at a slower pace and affordable. You can schedule with me here.
